The weekend project didn't go as planned

This weekend I was ready to finally repair the odometer and the instrument panel lights. Everything was going smooth, until I got to the step to remove the speedometer needle in order to access the broken odometer gear. Reading the forums I knew this would be the most critical step. I managed to break the shaft the needle is pressed onto. D'oh! Just for a reference, the shaft diameter measures in at .62mm. If nothing else, this car has made me learn to have a great deal of patience.

Not all is lost, as there are a few options.
  1. I requested a estimate to refresh the instrument cluster from a shop in California (http://www.nhspeedometer.com) They seem to be "The Place". Might be too expensive.
  2. A Euro Junkyard downtown has a complete cluster on their website. I will call them on Monday.
  3. There is a local gauge repair shop in Clearwater.
I'm hoping to just get the speedometer repaired if it's possible. I put the instrument panel light fix on hold until I figure out the Speedo.

If you stumble across this post looking for direction for these fixes, I used these sites as references.
The gauges are very hard to see at night.

The instrument cluster removal was easier than expected.

Ready for repair!

The backside.

Bits of the failed gear.

Cleaned up the spindle for the new gear.

The new gear installed. Might be all for nothing though.

More bits of the failed gear.

The speedo needle attached to the broken shaft.
