Fluids, learning, and a OEM battery

A few weeks ago, while changing the dash lights and aiming the new H4 headlights, the battery kept dying. I searched the 944 forums for what people are using in their 944's. People had all kinds of opinions.  Then, one wise sole said your Porsche dealership parts counter has the correct battery, so that's what I purchased. Sure, it was a little more expensive than an auto parts store battery, but like the wise sole said, "If you're worrying about the price of a battery, buying a 30 year old 944 might not be the hobby for you." Which is true.

Last weekend I attempted to change the transmission fluid, which is a pretty simple task... However I could not get the filler cap loose, which is not uncommon. I even had Beth under the car helping!

My friend Donnie said "Bring it to the shop Saturday", which I did. With the help of a friend, we were able to get the transmission plugs out! What I learned was, 1) I needed to get the car higher off the ground to help with leverage. 2) Old school mechanics just know stuff. 3) Unbolting the muffler and moving it a few inches to the side helped get the tool in the correct position.

Then, while I was filling the transmission with SWEPCO 201, Donnie said might as well flush the brake fluid. While the car was off the ground, we flushed the brakes with some DOT 4 fluid and they feel great. The brake fluid had chunks of stuff in it and was milky looking. The transmission fluid looked good but it smelled really bad. I didn't notice smoother shifting, it shifted pretty smooth already, but I did notice the transmission sounded better.

Got a little rust in the battery tray. Not great, but it something we'll take care of later.

OEM Porsche battery fits like a glove. Made in Germany.

A clean look with the battery cover installed.

Sprayed some BP Blaster to try an loosen up the transmission plugs. I knew this probably wouldn't help much, since these plugs are, by design, meant to keep fluid from leaking.

The 944 off the ground!

New filler and drain plugs installed with a generous coat of anti-seize! I need to get under the car and do some scrubbing.

Donnie's hand bleeding the brakes.

Next up..
  • Replace an AC hose
  • The fuel pump is still making noise. So I need to replace the fuel tank screen, fuel pump, fuel filter and related hoses
  • The 944 really needs new suspension
I'm showing great restraint not buying mods for the Abarth.
