A good amount of success today with the Porsche 944s

After last weekend's debacle, (see this post) I made some good progress with the 944. So after breaking the speedometer needle shaft, I called my go to parts guys at 944online.com.  They set me up with a used speedo. They actually sent me a whole instrument cluster!  This time I was able to remove the needle without breaking the shaft. I used the pulling up with a slight wiggle, not twisting technique and the needle popped right off. I'm excited to say the odometer is working once again!

A very helpful video on 944 odometer repair. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtqpmDUxhyk) I didn't use the pry technique, but it looked to workout well in this video.

While the instrument cluster was out, I also repaired the gauge light reflectors and upgraded to LED bulbs. This worked out really well, and I can see the gauges at night now.  However, some of the dash lights are not illuminating. My guess is the contacts on the ribbons cables need to be cleaned. This seems to be a thing with electrical connections with this car, which is nice and easy to fix.

Here's the kit LED blub kit. (https://944online.com/index.php/reflector-housing-repair-kit.html)

This is one of the "light tubes" on the instrument reflector housing. The old reflective material is disintegrated. What you see is half of it cleaned.
All of the light tubes cleaned. I used wash grade lacquer thinner for the cleaning process.

Using Dad's mini vise to put the bend into the new reflective material.

The new reflectors glued in place.

The new reflectors wrapped in Mylar.

Success removing the needle from the new/used speedo!

The original top half of the speedo mated to the new/old speedo.

Old gauge lights.

New LED gauge lights.

Next up...
  • I bought a power brake bleed kit, so I need to get some braided brake lines and change the fluid
  • Need to change the transmission fluid
  • Heading to Sebring next weekend for a vintage car race/show
  • Remove the rest of the old window tinting
  • Aim the new headlights
